Congressman Peterson Seeking Entries to Congressional Art Competition



WASHINGTON – Congressman Collin C. Peterson is inviting Seventh District high school students to submit artwork for the 2018 Congressional Art Competition.

The Congressional Art Competition is open to all high school students and the winning pieces are featured for one year in the Cannon Tunnel, which connects the House Office Buildings to the U.S. Capitol.

“I encourage young artists from across the district to display their talent by entering this contest,” Peterson said. “The yearly competition is a great opportunity for local artwork to be showcased at the Capitol and I look forward to seeing everyone’s hard work.”

The Congressional Art Competition began in 1982 as an opportunity for Members of Congress to recognize and encourage the artistic talent of their young constituents. Since then, more than 650,000 high-school students have participated in the nation-wide contest. 

Submitted artwork may be up to 26 inches x 26 inches x 4 inches (including the frame) and weigh no more than 15 pounds. Accepted mediums include:

·         Paintings – including oil, acrylics and watercolor
·         Drawings – including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink and markers
·         Collage (two-dimensional)
·         Prints – including lithographs, silkscreen and block prints
·         Mixed Media
·         Computer Generated Art
·         Photography

All entries must be original in concept, design and execution. Artwork that is a reproduction of another artist’s work, including photographs, does not qualify for this competition.

HOW TO APPLY:

To best ensure accessibility for all students, Peterson’s office will be accepting all Congressional Art Competition submissions online. Selection of the winning piece, made in early May, will be determined based upon the photograph submitted with the application.

Call for entries



A Woman's Perspective Multimedia Art Exhibitions and Events invites emerging and established artists to enter visual, literary, and performing art on the theme of SQUARE. Artists may enter works in more than one category. Open to everyone age 15 and older. No entry fees.

Entry forms are due Saturday, January 17, 2015. Visual art intake is Tuesday, January 27. Literary and performing art presentation is Sunday, February 8. Exhibition runs February 1-March 30, 2015 at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead MN.

DNR seeks designs for Minnesota’s 2015 pheasant stamp

Wildlife artists can submit entries for the 2015 Minnesota Pheasant Stamp from Monday,
Sept. 8, to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19.

The pheasant stamp is sold along with hunting and fishing licenses or as a collectable. Revenue from stamp sales is dedicated to pheasant management-related activities.

“We appreciate the talent and commitment of the artists who submit entries to the contest,” said Steve Merchant, wildlife populations and regulations manager with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. “Their work is part of our hunting heritage, and valued by collectors.”

The contest offers no prizes and is open to Minnesota residents only. Artists are not allowed to use any photographic product as part of their finished entries. Winning artists usually issue limited edition prints of the artwork and retain proceeds. Judging will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at DNR headquarters in St. Paul.

Artists who want to submit entries should closely read contest criteria and guidelines for submitting work, available from the DNR Information Center, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN 55155, and online at www.mndnr.gov/contests.

Mini Art Exhibit to be held at regional libraries

A Mini Art Exhibit sponsored by the Northwest Regional Arts Council (NWMAC) will be traveling to seven regional libraries in the coming months. The NWMAC's annual Regional Exhibit held in Middle River, Minnesota in April provided the fifteen impressive pieces of artwork for our annual Traveling Mini Art Exhibition. 

The Traveling Mini Art Exhibit includes original paintings, photography, drawings, pastel, prints, and clay pottery. Several of the artworks are award winning pieces selected by the show’s juror, Mary Therese of Bemidji, Minnesota.

Artists whose work was chosen for the mini exhibition are (adult artists): Alberta Johnson, and Jan Osborn, Thief River Falls; Mollie Rae Miller, Roseau; Susan Neufeld, Beltrami; Annethea Novacek, Greenbush; and (student artists): Brandi Lee, Halstad; Jaydn Rosell, Climax; Samantha Kraulik, Wannaska; Caleb Richardson, Thief River Falls; Elijah Neufeld, Beltrami; Skye Tillotson, Ada; Kiara Anderson, St. Hilaire; and Bryan Sanchez, Julie Ibanez, and Brooke Panzer, all of Crookston.

The Traveling Mini Art Exhibit will be appearing at Crookston's Public Library until Wednesday, June 4th. Afterward, the exhibit will be open to the public at the following libraries during regular hours on the following dates:
  • Climax Public Library June 5 – June 26
  • Hallock Public Library June 26– July 25
  • Thief River Falls Public Library July 25 – September 5
  • Fosston Public Library September 5 – October 3
  • Roseau Public Library October 3 – November 7
  • Warren Godel Library November 7 - December 3

NW MN Arts Council 2014 Spring Art Exhibition Winners



Warren, Minnesota (May 06, 2014) - The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council awarded $2450.00 dollars in prize money to adult and student artists’ at their annual Spring Art Exhibition.  The exhibition was held at the American Legion, Post 444 in Middle River, Minnesota April 16-27, 2014.  100 artists from the 7 county service area participated in this year's event.

Executive Director of NWMAC, Mara Wittman was on hand at the exhibition reception April 27, 2014 to present certificates to the winners.  Beau Bakken of Hallock took 1stplace in the Adult category for his acrylic painting, “Barcelona Spain” and was awarded $500.00.  The Adult People’s Choice Award went to Deb Aune of Gatzke for her painting, “Dad Loves His Wood Stove”.  She was awarded $100.00.

In the Student category, Bryan Sanchez of Crookston came in 1st place for his mixed media drawing, titled “Cultural Self Portrait”.  He was awarded $300.00.  The Student People’s Choice Award went to Brooke Panzer of Crookston for her sculpture, “Horsehair Potter”.  She received $50.00.

Many other artists, both adult and student, were recognized for their dedication to their art

The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council services Kittson, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake and Roseau counties and was pleased to have so many adults and students from the service area participate in this event!  The Arts are alive and well in Northwest Minnesota!

Photography Takes Center Stage at Split Rock Lighthouse with 3-Day Workshop and Afternoon Symposium in March



The Minnesota environment, natural and built, provides inspiration to a wide range of artists. Split Rock Lighthouse is a favorite for photographers, thanks to its natural beauty and historic value. Photographers of all skill levels are invited to hone their craft at a 3-day photography workshop or a 1-day symposium, both offered in early March.

Photography Workshop, Feb. 28, March 1 and 2.
During this 3-day workshop, John Gregor and Randy Hagar of ColdSnap Photography will provide personalized professional instruction to build technical camera skills for digital photography. The workshop is a hands-on experience making this event ideal for photography students, tourists and nature enthusiasts.

Participants will be encouraged to explore the landscape on their own and conduct an independent field shoot. Facilitators will provide insight for exercising creative control and embodying the essence of the North Shore in their work.

On Saturday, participants will join the Lake Superior Photography Symposium. Then on Sunday, a critique will be held to conclude the workshop and celebrate each participants' work.

Lake Superior Photography Symposium, March 1, 1 to 4 p.m.
Photography enthusiasts can opt for a shorter program where they can learn from four local photographers about their craft. Christian Dalbec, Bryan Hansel, Travis Novitsky and Emily Rose will discuss their work, showing some of their favorite photographs of Lake Superior. The symposium will include a question and answer session. John Gregor of ColdSnap photography will serve as the moderator. Guests are encouraged to go on a field shoot at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park after the presentation.
