Contaminated soil examination continues on Highway 59 at Plummer

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The excavation and examination of contaminated soil on Highway 59 at Plummer in Red Lake County continues as crews work to clean up a hazardous spill that occurred March 31 when a semitrailer collided with a train crossing the highway.

Excavation and testing of the material on the highway shoulder began this week and will likely continue into early next week to clean out the contaminated soil, requiring Highway 59 to remain closed until mid-May.

Motorists are warned not to drive around the barricades and should continue using the detour route until Highway 59 is officially reopened.
